U17 Australia coach is cautious ahead of the match against U17 Vietnam

Taif, April 4, 2025 – U17 Australia head coach Brad Maloney has expressed caution ahead of his team’s opening match against U17 Vietnam at the AFC U17 Asian Cup 2025. Drawn into a unpredictable Group B alongside powerhouses Japan and UAE, U17 Vietnam faces a stern test, but Maloney acknowledges that no game in this group will come easy—not even for his favored Australian side.

Speaking about the clash with U17 Vietnam, Maloney said: “We have great respect for U17 Vietnam. They performed well at the Southeast Asian Championship and in the qualifiers. We’re looking forward to this challenge. There are no easy matches in one of the toughest groups, with UAE and Japan also present.” The matchup, set for 10:00 p.m. tonight (Vietnam time) at Prince Saud bin Jalawi Stadium, marks a critical start for both teams vying for knockout-stage spots and a 2025 FIFA U17 World Cup berth.

Despite Australia’s status as a continental force—boasting talents like Nestory Irankunda, who shone in qualifiers—U17 Australia has never reached the final of this tournament. Maloney’s squad is hungry to change that, buoyed by the U20 team’s landmark AFC U20 Asian Cup triumph in early March 2025. “Our goal is to win the title,” Maloney declared. “We’re clear about going deep and claiming the championship this year.”

He added: “U20 Australia’s victory was a fantastic milestone—the first time our youth teams have won an Asian title. It’s inspiring, and if we can replicate that, it’ll prove our youth development is on the right track.” Maloney’s caution stems from Vietnam’s recent form, including two 1-0 friendly wins over U17 Oman in March, showcasing their counterattacking grit under coach Cristiano Roland.

Tonight’s showdown pits Australia’s physical, attacking style against Vietnam’s disciplined resilience. With Japan and UAE looming, a win could set the tone for Maloney’s championship ambitions. For U17 Vietnam, it’s a chance to upset a giant and ignite their campaign. Fans across Asia will tune in as Group B’s unpredictability unfolds under the Taif lights.
