‘Warrior’ Cong Phuong returns to national team

Hanoi, 22 May, 2025 – Vietnam National Team roster for the upcoming match against Malaysia has garnered attention with the return of striker Nguyen Cong Phuong after nearly two years away. Cong Phuong’s last appearance for the national team was in a friendly match against Palestine in September 2023.

This season, Cong Phuong has been in impressive form, scoring 7 goals for Binh Phuoc FC, leading the top scorer list in the First Division. With Xuan Son, Van Toan, and Bui Vi Hao absent due to injuries, Cong Phuong will provide Coach Kim Sang Sik with more attacking options.

Among the 23 players called up, Cao Pendant Quang Vinh will have the opportunity to make his debut for the national team. He has been performing well, helping Hanoi Police FC reach the Southeast Asia Champions League final. Filip Nguyen also returns after a family absence.

However, Vietnam will miss the presence of Doan Ngoc Tan, a crucial defensive midfielder, due to injury. Additionally, full-backs Ho Tan Tai and Vu Van Thanh will also be absent because of injuries.

Vietnam National Team will gather on May 29 in Hanoi before traveling to Malaysia on June 6. The match against Malaysia is crucial, as only the group winner will qualify for the 2027 Asian Cup finals.
