Breaking: Coach Kim Sang Sik calls up Quoc Viet to replace Cong Phuong

Hanoi, 3 June, 2025 – Although highly anticipated, the first collaboration between coach Kim Sang-sik and Cong Phuong will have to be cut short as the Binh Phuoc FC forward prepares to leave the Vietnam national team.

After nearly two years apart, there is no doubt that Cong Phuong has been the most talked-about name upon his return to the Vietnam national team for the training camp in preparation for the crucial away match in Malaysia in the third round of the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers.

Cong Phuong was assigned by coach Kim Sang-sik to speak with the media, expressing his thoughts honestly: “Like all other players, I always feel honored to wear the Vietnam national team jersey. I am aware that I must try my best to contribute. I don’t focus too much on whether I play or not.”

During the training session on June 2, Coach Kim assigned him the task of distributing the ball and initiating attacks for the Vietnam national team, and he executed this well, following the instructions for quick, simple, clean ball handling and minimizing dribbling.

However, the latest update from Thanh Nien newspaper indicates that Cong Phuong will not be able to continue with this training camp. He is preparing to leave the Vietnam national team due to a worsening foot injury that makes it difficult for him to keep up with the demanding training load.

Replacing Cong Phuong is Quoc Viet from the U22 Vietnam team. The Vietnam forward line continues to face setbacks, as Van Toan, Xuan Son, and Vi Hao have also been absent due to injuries.
