Nguyen Filip – a bright spot under the gloomy sky at Bukit Jalil

Kuala Lumpur, 11 June, 2025 – Despite Vietnam’s heavy 0-4 loss to Malaysia in the second round of the 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers, goalkeeper Nguyen Filip emerged as one of the rare bright spots for the “Golden Stars.” In a match marked by defensive instability and mounting pressure from the home side, Filip’s exceptional performance stood out as a testament to his quality and resilience.

With Vietnam missing key defenders Bui Tien Dung and Thanh Chung, the backline was left severely undermanned. Replacements like Ly Duc and Xuan Manh struggled against the physical and relentless attacks from a Malaysia side powered by naturalized players. Yet, it was Nguyen Filip—wearing the number 1 jersey—who held the line and prevented an early collapse.

Filip made at least four top-class saves in the first half alone, keeping Vietnam level before the break. In the 40th minute, he denied Figueiredo’s powerful header from a Holgado cross with a spectacular leap to tip the ball over the bar. Moments later, amid a crowd of towering Malaysia attackers on the resulting corner, the 33-year-old keeper bravely collected the ball to relieve the pressure.

Just minutes later, Arif Aiman broke free in a counterattack, gliding past Duy Manh to go one-on-one with Filip. But once again, the Hanoi Police FC goalkeeper rose to the occasion, blocking Aiman’s shot with remarkable composure and reflexes.

Even as the defense crumbled in the second half, Filip continued to battle. In the 51st minute, he rushed off his line to deny Aiman once more, then threw his body in front of a follow-up shot from Figueiredo in a stunning double-save sequence. Despite the roar of nearly 70,000 Malaysian fans, Filip kept his calm and carried on with poise.

His most impressive moment came in the final minute. Figueiredo, once again breaking through the offside trap, fired a thunderous shot toward the near post. It seemed destined for goal—but Filip flew across his line and, with lightning-quick reflexes, parried the shot away, leaving the striker and the crowd stunned.

While coach Kim Sang Sik’s men were unable to salvage any points in Kuala Lumpur, Nguyen Filip’s performance deserved recognition. In a night where Vietnam was overwhelmed and second-best in every area of the pitch, the veteran goalkeeper stood tall—literally and figuratively. His shot-stopping, leadership, and unshakable mindset offered a rare glimmer of hope in an otherwise disappointing outing. For Vietnam to bounce back in the remaining qualifiers, performances like Filip’s will be essential.
