Vietnam start VTV Cup 2025 with commanding 3-0 victory over Australia

Vinh Phuc, 28 June, 2025 – On the evening of June 28, the Vietnam women’s national volleyball team began their VTV Cup 2025 campaign with a dominant 3-0 win over Australia in the tournament opener held in Vinh Phuc.

Facing an Australian team considered the underdogs, coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet still approached the match with respect for the opponent and a firm goal of securing victory in the opening fixture. Vietnam fielded their strongest lineup, including stars such as Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen, Tran Thi Thanh Thuy, Nguyen Thi Trinh, Nguyen Thi Uyen, Tran Thi Bich Thuy, Doan Thi Lam Oanh, and libero Nguyen Khanh Dang.

Backed by a packed home crowd at the Vinh Phuc Indoor Stadium, the Vietnamese players established an early lead with a commanding attacking rhythm. Despite occasional lapses in coordination and defensive coverage that allowed Australia to score relatively easily, Vietnam comfortably took the first set 25-18.

In the second set, coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet made a bold move by substituting several key players, including Thanh Thuy, Bich Tuyen, and Thi Trinh, giving opportunities to emerging talents such as Pham Thi Hien, Vi Thi Nhu Quynh, and Nguyen Thi Phuong. Even with the second unit on the court, Vietnam continued to dominate play and secured the set 25-17. Nhu Quynh and Kieu Trinh stood out with their impressive attacking contributions.

Australia put up a stronger fight in the third set, staying close in the scoreline during the early rallies. However, Vietnam’s superior skills and experience ultimately prevailed, as the hosts surged ahead to claim a 25-14 win and wrap up the match in straight sets.

The comprehensive 3-0 victory marks an ideal start for Vietnam in their pursuit of the VTV Cup title, showcasing depth in both their main squad and bench players.

Earlier in the day, two Group B matches also took place. Vietnam U21 suffered a 0-3 loss to Chinese Taipei, while U21 Thailand were narrowly edged out 2-3 by Russian club Korabelka.

Vietnam U21 will next face U21 Thailand at 2:00 PM on June 29, while the senior Vietnam national team are scheduled to take on the Philippines at 7:00 PM the same day.
