Vietnam beat Thailand in thriller to claim third Asian Games 2026 gold medal

Nagoya, 3 Oct 2026 – Vietnam’s women’s sepak takraw team delivered another memorable performance at ASIAD 2026, defeating powerhouse Thailand 2-1 in a dramatic women’s quadrant final to secure the country’s third gold medal of the Games.

Vietnam produced an outstanding display against Thailand, one of the world’s leading sepak takraw nations, in a tense final that went the full three sets. The Vietnamese players repeatedly responded under pressure and eventually prevailed 2-1 to claim the women’s quadrant title. The victory brought Vietnam its third gold medal at ASIAD 2026 and continued an exceptional tournament for the country’s women’s sepak takraw team.

Vietnam made an impressive start to the final, taking the opening set 15-11. The second set developed into a much tighter contest as the two teams traded points and remained locked together deep into the closing stages. Thailand eventually edged the set 17-15, forcing the gold-medal match into a deciding third set.

Despite facing difficulties early in the decider, Vietnam remained composed and gradually regained control. The Vietnamese players moved ahead and maintained their advantage before closing out the third set 15-11, sealing a 2-1 victory and sparking celebrations after an intense battle against their regional rivals.

The triumph also represented Vietnam women’s sepak takraw team’s second gold medal at ASIAD 2026, following their earlier success in the women’s doubles event. It further underlined an impressive campaign for the team, with the quadrant victory carrying additional significance given Thailand’s long-standing status as one of the dominant forces in world sepak takraw.

Following the victory, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Lam Thi Phuong Thanh sent her congratulations to the team, praising the players for the courage and determination they displayed throughout the final. She highlighted their ability to perform under intense pressure against a world-class opponent and instructed the Vietnam Sports Delegation to provide an immediate reward to the gold-medal-winning athletes.

Nguyen Hong Minh, head of the Vietnam Sports Delegation, subsequently presented the reward to the sepak takraw players in recognition of their achievement. The victory delivered the Vietnamese delegation its third gold medal of the Asian Games, providing another major boost to the country’s campaign in Aichi-Nagoya.

With gold medals in both the women’s doubles and women’s quadrant competitions, Vietnam’s women’s sepak takraw team have now emerged as one of the country’s standout performers at ASIAD 2026.
