Nguyen Thuy Linh advances to second round of 2025 Canada open

Canada, 3 July, 2025 – Vietnam’s top badminton player, Nguyen Thuy Linh, has advanced to the second round of the women’s singles at the 2025 Canada Open, a BWF World Tour Super 300 event with a total prize pool of $240,000 USD.

After an early exit in the first round of the U.S. Open last week, Nguyen Thuy Linh entered the Canada Open with improved preparation and a clear determination to perform. Ranked 22nd in the world and seeded second in the women’s singles draw, Thuy Linh made a strong start by defeating Hungary’s Vivien Sandorhazi (world No. 81) in straight sets 21-12, 21-14. The match lasted just 34 minutes, showcasing the Vietnamese star’s sharp form and tactical control.

Her next opponent in the round of 16 will be Chen Su Yu of Taiwan, currently ranked 91st in the world.

Top seed in the women’s singles at this year’s Canada Open is Michelle Li of Canada, world No. 19, who is competing in front of her home crowd.

In the men’s singles, Vietnam also has two representatives: Le Duc Phat (world No. 62) and Nguyen Hai Dang (world No. 67). Unfortunately, the draw placed them against each other in the opening round. In the all-Vietnamese clash, Nguyen Hai Dang came out on top, progressing to the second round after a solid performance.

Next, Hai Dang will face a tough challenge as he goes up against Japan’s Naraoka Kodai, the tournament’s second seed and world No. 7. The upcoming match is expected to test Hai Dang’s resilience and provide valuable experience on the international stage.

Vietnamese fans will be keeping a close watch as their top players continue to compete at the 2025 Canada Open, hoping for further success in both singles categories.
