Porto, 5 July, 2025 – Vietnamese cue sports suffered a disappointing outing at the ongoing Carom World Cup in Porto, Portugal, as all six participating players were eliminated before the Round of 16, including top hope Tran Quyet Chien.
Tran Quyet Chien, Vietnam’s most highly rated player, was expected to make a deep run in the tournament. However, competing in Group D, he was unable to progress past the group stage. In his decisive final group match on July 4, Quyet Chien suffered a 27-40 loss to Greece’s Nikos Polychronopoulos, sealing his early exit from the tournament.
In the same group, Bao Phuong Vinh also bowed out after a 23-40 defeat to Belgian player Peter Ceulemans, thus confirming the elimination of both Vietnamese representatives.
Earlier, Tran Thanh Luc was knocked out in the group stage, while Thon Viet Hoang Minh narrowly lost a crucial match 37-40 to South Korean star Cho Myung Woo and also failed to advance. Another Vietnamese player, Chiem Hong Thai, also suffered defeat and exited early.
Among the six Vietnamese players, Dao Van Ly had the most promising performance. He successfully advanced from the group stage after a series of solid victories, raising hopes for a deeper run.
However, in his Round of 16 match held early on July 5 (Vietnam time), Dao Van Ly faced Spain’s Sergio Jimenez. Despite a competitive effort, he fell short and lost 40-50, becoming the last Vietnamese player to be eliminated from the tournament.
With these results, Vietnam ends its campaign at the Porto Carom World Cup without any players remaining in contention after the Round of 16. It is a disappointing outcome for the Vietnamese billiards team, which had entered the tournament with high expectations, especially after the recent international successes of players like Tran Quyet Chien and Bao Phuong Vinh.
The team will now turn its focus to future international events, where they aim to bounce back and restore Vietnam’s standing in the world carom circuit.
