Ontario, 5 July, 2025 – Vietnam’s top female badminton player, Nguyen Thuy Linh, continued her impressive run at the 2025 Canada Open by defeating Wong Ling Ching of Malaysia to advance to the semifinals of the women’s singles event. The tournament, part of the BWF World Tour Super 300 series, features a total prize pool of $240,000.
In the quarterfinal match held early on July 5 (Vietnam time), Thuy Linh faced a tough challenge from Wong Ling Ching. After more than one hour of intense competition, the Vietnamese star emerged victorious with a 2-1 win.
Thuy Linh started the match assertively, forcing her opponent into defensive positions with aggressive net play. However, Wong Ling Ching capitalized on key opportunities to take the opening game 21-17.
In the second set, Thuy Linh regained her composure and adjusted her strategy, using precise drop shots near the net to disrupt Wong’s rhythm. Her patience paid off, and she edged the set 22-20 to level the match.
With momentum on her side, the world No. 22 delivered a dominant performance in the decider, winning 21-15 to seal the 2-1 victory and book a spot in the semifinals.
This is Thuy Linh’s second appearance in a semifinal at an international tournament in 2025. Earlier in February, she reached the final of the German Open and finished as runner-up — her best result of the season so far.
Among the three Vietnamese representatives at the 2025 Canada Open — Nguyen Hai Dang, Le Duc Phat, and Nguyen Thuy Linh — only Thuy Linh remains in contention. As the No. 2 seed in the women’s singles draw, she now stands a strong chance of advancing further and capturing her first international title of the year.
Her next opponent in the semifinal will be revealed following the completion of the remaining quarterfinal matches. With her current form, Thuy Linh is one step away from another shot at international glory.
