Although beach wrestling remains relatively unknown in Vietnam, the sport delivered unexpected success for the national delegation at the Asian Youth Games 2025, with one silver and one bronze medal earned on the evening of October 30.
In the women’s 55kg division, Bui Ngoc Thao Thom produced a remarkable performance, defeating opponents from the Philippines, Bahrain, and Thailand to advance to the final. In a tightly contested gold medal bout against Anjali from India, the 16-year-old Vietnamese wrestler fought courageously but fell short 1-2, securing a silver medal for Vietnam.
In the men’s 60kg category, Lam Minh Gia Huy, aged 17, clinched the bronze medal after an impressive victory over Mongolian wrestler Ochir Bayarsaikhan. Earlier in the competition, Gia Huy had finished second in Group B and reached the semifinals, where he was defeated by Amir Ali Domirkolaei of Iran.
Vietnam’s success extended beyond beach wrestling, as athletes in jujitsu and judo also contributed to the medal haul. In the women’s 48kg jujitsu event, 15-year-old Nong Bao Ngoc earned a bronze medal by overcoming Najla Hashem of the UAE with a convincing 2-0 score. Meanwhile, in the men’s 48kg jujitsu division, Hoang Manh Luong also secured bronze after defeating Sebastian Blaize from the Philippines.
In women’s judo (under 57kg), Pham Minh Tuyet captured another bronze medal, narrowly edging Suvd Erdene of Mongolia on points in a tense match.
With these achievements, Vietnam concluded the day with one silver and three bronze medals, raising the nation’s total to 19 medals at the Asian Youth Games 2025 — including one gold, seven silver, and eleven bronze. As of 8:10 p.m. (Vietnam time) on October 30, Vietnam stands at 21st place in the overall medal table.
The day’s results underscore the growing diversity and potential of Vietnam’s young athletes across multiple sports, from emerging disciplines like beach wrestling to traditional strengths such as judo and martial arts.
