Coach Kim Sang Sik warns of improved Laos but confident Vietnam will start SEA Games 33 strong

Bangkok, 2 December 2025 – Speaking at the pre-match press conference at Rajamangala Stadium, coach Kim Sang-sik acknowledged the rapid progress of U23 Laos under his compatriot Ha Hyeok-jun, but affirmed that U23 Vietnam are fully prepared and determined to secure three points in their SEA Games 33 opener on December 3.

U23 Vietnam head coach Kim Sang-sik expressed both respect and confidence ahead of the team’s SEA Games 33 opener against U23 Laos, scheduled for December 3 at Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok. The Korean tactician emphasised that the first match will play a vital role in Vietnam’s ambition to progress past the group stage and begin their gold-medal quest on the right foot.

Opening the press conference at 13:00 local time, coach Kim underlined the importance of the opening fixture: “The first match on December 3 is extremely important for U23 Vietnam. Head coach Ha Hyeok-jun has helped U23 Laos become much stronger. Therefore, tomorrow’s match will be crucial for our goal of making it through the group stage. The entire team is focused and ready to achieve the best possible result.”

The encounter brings together two sides already familiar with each other. Many players from both U23 Vietnam and U23 Laos previously faced off at senior level during regional competitions. At youth level, Vietnam also defeated Laos 3-0 at the 2025 AFF U23 Championship, where the Golden Star Warriors claimed their third consecutive regional crown.

Despite the historical advantage, Kim Sang-sik chose a cautious approach. He praised the significant improvements Laos have made under coach Ha Hyeok-jun, especially in tactical organisation, discipline, and overall team structure — progress clearly visible in their recent performances across multiple tournaments.

“Laos and Vietnam have met many times at senior level, and Vietnam have always won,” Kim noted. “But coach Ha has done an excellent job with tactics, management, and organisation, helping Lao football improve rapidly. I have great respect for U23 Laos. Tomorrow’s match will not be easy.”

Kim added that U23 Vietnam have prepared thoroughly over the past weeks and are steadily improving in all aspects. With clear objectives and a full 23-player squad ready for action, the coach believes his team will be well-equipped to handle the challenge.

“We have prepared well, stayed focused, and are making progress step by step. I expect both teams to perform well tomorrow. U23 Vietnam will do everything possible to achieve our match target,” he affirmed.

U23 Vietnam will face Laos on December 3 before meeting Malaysia on December 11 in Group B. The team arrived in Bangkok on December 1 and held their first training session at RBAC University Stadium, adjusting quickly to local conditions as they gear up for SEA Games 33.
