Bangkok, 13 December 2025 – At noon on December 13, shooter Le Thi Mong Tuyen could not hide her disappointment after narrowly missing out on the gold medal in the women’s 10m air rifle individual event at SEA Games 33.
After winning the gold medal in the mixed team 10m air rifle event on December 12, Mong Tuyen was widely expected to continue her golden run for Vietnamese shooting in the women’s individual category. Vietnam’s chances were further boosted by the presence of three competitors in the event: Le Thi Mong Tuyen, Phi Thanh Thao, and Nguyen Thi Thao.
In the qualification round, Phi Thanh Thao delivered a remarkable performance, scoring 627.6 points after 60 shots, equaling the SEA Games record previously held by Indonesian shooter Karini. Mong Tuyen finished sixth, earning a place in the final, while Nguyen Thi Thao was eliminated after placing 13th, as only the top eight shooters advanced. Thanks to the combined results of the three athletes, Vietnam secured the silver medal in the women’s team 10m air rifle event with a total score of 1,872.8 points.
In the final, both Thanh Thao and Mong Tuyen started strongly. At several stages, the two Vietnamese shooters occupied the top two positions, temporarily pushing aside the Indonesian contenders. However, Thanh Thao unexpectedly struggled with nerves, producing a series of inaccurate shots and eventually finishing fifth.
Mong Tuyen was then left in a direct battle with two Indonesian shooters for the podium. The 2003-born athlete showed resilience but suffered a lapse in concentration, recording two consecutive shots below 10 points. As a result, she had to settle for the bronze medal, missing out on gold in heartbreaking fashion.
Despite the disappointment, Mong Tuyen’s performance remained a positive highlight for Vietnamese shooting at SEA Games 33, following her gold medal success just one day earlier.
