Qatar, 30 December 2025 – In their final warm-up match before the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2026, U23 Vietnam suffered a narrow 1-2 defeat to a physically strong and efficient U23 Syria side in a demanding test in Qatar.
On the evening of December 30, U23 Vietnam played a high-quality international friendly against U23 Syria at Hamad Bin Khalifa Stadium in Qatar as part of their preparations for the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2026. Facing a West Asian opponent known for physical strength and clinical finishing, the match provided a valuable benchmark for head coach Kim Sang-sik and his players.
Coach Kim continued to experiment with his lineup, fielding many familiar names such as goalkeeper Tran Trung Kien, defenders Pham Ly Duc and Nguyen Hieu Minh, midfielders Nguyen Thai Son and Khuat Van Khang, along with attackers Nguyen Dinh Bac and Bui Vi Hao, who was given a starting role. With a strong and balanced squad, U23 Vietnam showed confidence from the opening minutes, applying pressing and opting for an open, attacking approach rather than sitting deep.
Despite Vietnam’s proactive start, U23 Syria gradually imposed better control of possession and demonstrated their efficiency in front of goal. In the 40th minute, from a quick attacking move, the West Asian side capitalized on a rare clear chance to open the scoring, leaving U23 Vietnam trailing 0-1 at half-time.

The scoreline did not fully reflect the balance of play in the first half. Vietnam created several promising opportunities, the most notable coming in the 45th minute when Van Thuan, introduced in the 28th minute to replace Dinh Bac, headed wide from close range, just three meters from goal. Overall, U23 Vietnam missed three to four clear chances before the break, something that would later prove costly.
In contrast, Syria’s strength lay in their composure and efficiency. While enjoying less attacking volume, they made the most of their moments. Early in the second half, in the 58th minute, U23 Syria doubled their lead to make it 2-0, once again punishing Vietnam for lapses in concentration.
U23 Vietnam continued to push forward and were rewarded late in the match. In the 87th minute, substitute Le Phat found the net to pull one goal back, reducing the deficit to 1-2. However, there was not enough time to complete a comeback.
Although the result went against them, the match served as a crucial test for U23 Vietnam, highlighting both positives in their build-up play and areas needing improvement, particularly in finishing and defensive efficiency. With the AFC U23 Asian Cup approaching, this friendly offered timely lessons as the team prepares to face the intense challenges awaiting them on the continental stage.
