Saudi Arabia, 5 January 2026 – Head coach Kim Sang-sik expressed strong confidence in U23 Vietnam’s preparation and mentality, affirming that the team are fully ready to compete for a place in the quarter-finals as they open their AFC U23 Asian Cup 2026 campaign against Jordan.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference on the afternoon of January 5 (Vietnam time), Kim Sang-sik emphasized that despite the high level of competition at the tournament, U23 Vietnam enter the opening match with belief and clear objectives. “All teams at this tournament are very strong. However, we have a very good mentality and are aiming to secure a place in the quarter-finals,” the Korean coach stated.
When asked about the pressure of following the historic achievement of Park Hang-seo, who led U23 Vietnam to the final of the 2018 U23 Asian Cup in Changzhou, Kim Sang-sik was calm and composed. “Coach Park Hang-seo did an excellent job, there is no doubt about that. But now things are different. We are focusing on our current squad,” he said.
Kim Sang-sik highlighted that since winning the gold medal at SEA Games 33 in Thailand, U23 Vietnam have maintained a high-quality preparation process. “After SEA Games 33, we have prepared well and trained well every day. The journey ahead will be very difficult, but I believe our players are in very good physical condition, have strong mental strength, and are ready in every aspect. We will show that on the pitch. I believe everything will be fine,” he added.
The head coach also shared a personal note about his close relationship with the players during the intensive preparation period. “I have worked with the players continuously for two months. I see them more than my own family. Sometimes I miss home, but at the same time I feel closer to the players and have become used to it,” Kim said. He stressed that the SEA Games gold medal was a meaningful achievement but reminded his squad to remain humble and fully focused on the continental challenge ahead.
“We are very confident before tomorrow’s match. We will try to bring positive emotions to Vietnamese fans. I hope everyone will enjoy the game,” Kim Sang-sik concluded.
The opening match between U23 Vietnam and Jordan at the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2026 will kick off at 18:30 on January 6 (Vietnam time).
