The year of horse with opportunities and challenges for the Golden Star Warriors

Hanoi, 16 February 2026 – Vietnam’s national team is preparing for a crucial and demanding 2026 season, as coach Kim Sang Sik and his squad gear up for major regional and continental competitions, including the challenge of defending their ASEAN Cup crown.

The year will begin with a high-stakes clash against Malaysia in the AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers, scheduled for late March 2026. This rematch is expected to be significantly tougher, especially after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) temporarily lifted FIFA’s suspension on seven naturalized Malaysian players. This decision opens the door for Malaysia to strengthen their squad with previously unavailable talents. In addition, the Malaysian Football Association is reportedly accelerating the naturalization process for more players to enhance their competitiveness ahead of the showdown with Vietnam.

Despite the increased difficulty, this match presents a valuable opportunity for Vietnam to demonstrate their growth and resilience under coach Kim Sang Sik. The team has undergone notable changes since their previous defeat on Malaysian soil. The return of key striker Nguyen Xuan Son has bolstered Vietnam’s attacking options, while several overseas Vietnamese and naturalized players, including Quang Vinh, Phi Long, and Hoang Hen, have added greater depth and versatility to the squad.

With the advantage of playing on home ground, Vietnam will aim to secure a vital victory over Malaysia and strengthen their position in the qualification campaign. The result could prove decisive as both teams compete for a place in the 2027 AFC Asian Cup.

Beyond the Asian Cup qualifiers, Vietnam’s other major objective in 2026 is to successfully defend their ASEAN Cup title. However, the tournament’s revised schedule will make the challenge even more demanding. Unlike previous editions held outside FIFA international windows, the competition will now take place in the summer following the FIFA World Cup. This change allows regional rivals such as Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia to call up their strongest overseas-based players, significantly raising the tournament’s overall quality and intensity.

While the increased level of competition presents a major test, it also offers Vietnam an ideal platform to reaffirm their regional dominance. The emergence of a talented new generation, highlighted by the impressive performances of the U23 squad in 2025, provides optimism for the future.

With a blend of experienced leaders and promising young stars, Vietnam enters 2026 with strong ambitions. The year will not only test the team’s ability to defend their titles but also shape their standing in Asian football for years to come.
