Vietnam women’s futsal team fall to Australia in ASEAN championship 2026 opener

Thailand, 24 February 2026 – In their opening match of the 2026 Southeast Asian Women’s Futsal Championship, the Vietnam Women’s Futsal Team faced Australia, a side considered a tough opponent for coach Nguyen Dinh Hoang and his players. Australia brought several squad members who had competed in last year’s AFC Women’s Futsal Championship, making them a formidable challenge.

As expected, Australia used their physical advantage to trouble Vietnam throughout the game. They were aggressive in challenges and committed tactical fouls to disrupt Vietnam’s rhythm. The Australians also launched quick counterattacks, with number 2 Fazzari standing out as a constant threat. If not for the sharp reflexes of goalkeeper Thuy Linh, Australia might have taken the lead earlier. The first half ended in a goalless draw.

After the break, Vietnam started brightly, creating dangerous chances through Ngoc Han and K’Thua. However, despite their improved attacking play, they were unable to find the breakthrough.

While enjoying a positive spell, Vietnam conceded in the 23rd minute. From a kick-in taken by Holder, Fruscalzo capitalized inside the area and finished from close range to beat Thuy Linh.

Following the setback, Vietnam pushed forward in search of an equalizer. Coach Nguyen Dinh Hoang tried different tactical adjustments, including deploying the power-play strategy, but the team could not convert their chances.

Instead of leveling the score, Vietnam conceded again in the 38th minute. Fazzari punished a failed power-play attempt by Vietnam, sealing a 2–0 victory for Australia.

In the end, Vietnam Women’s Futsal Team suffered a 0–2 defeat to Australia, marking a disappointing start to their 2026 Southeast Asian Women’s Futsal Championship campaign.
