Thailand, 5 April 2026 – Entering the 2026 ASEAN Futsal Championship, the Vietnam national futsal team will take its first step in the journey toward securing a place at the World Cup.
The team’s schedule has attracted attention as they head into the tournament. Head coach Diego Giustozzi considers the 2026 ASEAN Futsal Championship an important stepping stone for Vietnam to gain experience and move closer to competing for a World Cup spot in the coming years.
Despite some initial difficulties, coach Diego Giustozzi believes things are now on the right track in his first stint in Asia: “The beginning was quite challenging, but now I understand my players much better after working with them for a period of time. Over the past one to two years, we have improved mentally, adjusted our playing style, and are moving in the right direction in our plan to compete for a World Cup place at the upcoming Asian finals.”
According to Giustozzi, Vietnam have a young and promising squad but need more time to gain international experience. He also noted that competition in Asia is becoming increasingly intense, with around 10 to 12 national teams capable of fighting for World Cup qualification.
That is why tournaments like the 2026 ASEAN Futsal Championship play a crucial role in helping players accumulate real match experience. To prepare for the event, the Vietnam futsal team gathered on March 16 in Ho Chi Minh City before traveling to Thailand for a training camp starting March 30.
At the 2026 ASEAN Futsal Championship, Vietnam are in Group A and will face Myanmar (April 6), Timor-Leste (April 7), and Thailand (April 8).
