China, 8 May 2026 – Vietnam U17 women’s team are set for a crucial showdown against Australia U17 Women in the quarter-finals of the AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup 2026, with a place at the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup at stake.
Vietnam secured their spot in the knockout stage after finishing second in Group A, following a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Myanmar on May 7. According to the tournament bracket released by the Asian Football Confederation, Vietnam’s quarter-final opponent would be the runners-up of Group B.
That position eventually went to Australia after they suffered a heavy 0-5 defeat against Japan in the final Group B match. Despite the loss, Australia finished second in the group with four points and will now face Vietnam in the last eight.
The quarter-final clash is scheduled to take place at 2:00 PM on May 11. For the team coached by Masahiko Okiyama, the stakes are extremely high. A victory would not only send Vietnam into the semi-finals but also guarantee qualification for the 2026 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup.
Interestingly, Vietnam and Australia have recently developed a growing rivalry at U17 level. Before this upcoming women’s quarter-final, Vietnam U17 men had already defeated Australia U17 2-1 in the semi-finals of the 2026 AFF U17 Championship on their way to winning the regional title.
With confidence rising after their impressive group-stage campaign, Vietnam U17 Women will now aim to continue their fairytale run and take one step closer to making history on the world stage.
