Indonesia, 4 June 2026 – Vietnam U19 moved to the top of Group A at the ASEAN U19 Championship 2026 after securing a dominant victory, while hosts Indonesia U19 were left trailing on goal difference despite recording another win.
In the second round of Group A matches on June 4, Vietnam produced an emphatic 5-0 victory over Myanmar U19, while Indonesia defeated Timor-Leste U19 3-0. Both teams now sit on six points from two matches, but Vietnam lead the standings thanks to a superior goal difference of +8 compared to Indonesia’s +6.
The 2026 ASEAN U19 Championship features 11 teams divided into three groups. Only the three group winners and the best runner-up will advance to the semi-finals, making every goal crucial in the race for qualification.
As a result, Vietnam only need a draw against Indonesia in their final Group A match on June 7 to secure first place and a semi-final berth. Indonesia, meanwhile, must claim victory to overtake Vietnam and finish top of the group.
Even if Vietnam were to lose by a single goal, coach Yutaka Ikeuchi’s side could still remain in contention for the tournament’s best runner-up spot thanks to their commanding 5-0 win over Myanmar. In that scenario, Vietnam would likely compete with teams such as Malaysia or Cambodia based on points and goal difference.

However, Vietnam will be aiming to avoid relying on other results by securing a positive outcome against the hosts and maintaining control of their own destiny.
The ASEAN U19 Championship 2026 is being held in Medan and Deli Serdang, Indonesia, from June 1 to June 13. Group A consists of Indonesia, Vietnam, Myanmar, and Timor-Leste, while Group B features Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei. Group C includes Australia, Cambodia, and the Philippines.
Elsewhere in the tournament, Thailand U19 lead Group B after a crushing 9-0 victory over Brunei U19, with Malaysia U19 sitting second following a 3-0 win against Singapore U19.
In Group C, Australia U19 underlined their title credentials with a remarkable 10-0 demolition of Philippines U19.
Vietnam entered the tournament without several key players due to graduation exams and club commitments. Notable absences include Hoang Anh Gia Lai prospects Dinh Quang Kiet and Tran Gia Bao, while Nguyen Le Phat remains with Ninh Binh FC and Belgian-Vietnamese forward Pham Anh Khoi is sidelined with a ligament injury.
The decisive Group A showdown between Vietnam and Indonesia is scheduled for June 7 at 20:00 local time, with a place in the semi-finals on the line.
