Tran Viet Cuong delighted to score first goal for national team

South Korea, 6 July 2026 – The Vietnam national team returned to the training ground in Incheon, South Korea, on July 6 as preparations continued for the 2026 ASEAN Championship. Following a convincing 6-0 victory over Siheung FC in their opening friendly, head coach Kim Sang Sik adjusted the training schedule to focus on recovery while maintaining the players’ fitness ahead of the next test against Yongin FC of K League 2.

The session mainly consisted of small-sided possession and combination drills designed to sharpen the players’ touch and teamwork. Although recovery was the primary objective, the coaching staff maintained a high training intensity throughout. During a six-versus-six exercise, players were instructed to increase the tempo, helping improve both their physical condition and decision-making in tight spaces.

Speaking before training, striker Nguyen Tran Viet Cuong reflected on scoring the opening goal in the win over Siheung FC.

The forward admitted the goal carried special meaning, as it was his first in Vietnam colors, even if it came in a friendly match.

“It was my first goal for the Vietnam national team, even though it was only a training match. It gives me extra motivation and confidence to keep working hard in training and perform well in the upcoming matches,” Viet Cuong said.

Vietnam still have two tougher friendlies remaining against Yongin FC and Gangwon FC of K League 1. Viet Cuong said he is ready to seize any opportunity given to him by the coaching staff.

“The next two matches will be much more challenging. If I’m given the chance to play, I’ll give everything I have and do my best to fulfill my role.”

Competition for places in Vietnam’s attacking line has intensified, but the young striker views it as a positive challenge rather than added pressure.

“We have many quality attacking players in the squad. I see the competition as motivation to keep improving and earn my place through my own performances.”

Viet Cuong also revealed that Kim Sang Sik regularly holds one-on-one conversations with players to motivate them and explain his football philosophy, ensuring everyone clearly understands their tactical responsibilities and role within the team.

When asked which teammate he would most like to partner with in attack, Viet Cuong immediately chose Nguyen Xuan Son.

“If I could choose, I’d love to play alongside Xuan Son because I really admire his playing style.”

Vietnam will continue training in Incheon before facing Yongin FC on July 8 in their second friendly of the South Korea training camp. The match is expected to provide a sterner examination for Kim Sang Sik’s side as the coaching staff continue evaluating the squad and refining tactical plans before returning home to face Myanmar in their final warm-up match ahead of the 2026 ASEAN Championship.
