Myanmar head coach wary of Vietnam’s dangerous front three ahead of friendly match

Thai Nguyen, 17 July 2026 – Myanmar head coach Jorn Andersen has singled out Vietnam’s attacking trio of Do Hoang Hen, Nguyen Tai Loc, and Nguyen Xuan Son as the biggest threats ahead of the international friendly at Thai Nguyen Stadium.

Before taking charge of Myanmar, Andersen previously faced Vietnam while coaching Hong Kong, China, suffering a 2-0 defeat in an international friendly in 2023. Reflecting on that experience, the Norwegian tactician believes the Golden Star Warriors have developed significantly over the past few years.

“I think the Vietnam national team has improved a great deal,” Andersen said at the pre-match press conference. “In particular, they have three very high-quality naturalized forwards. Overall, Vietnam have one of the strongest squads in Southeast Asia.”

The 62-year-old coach also struck a realistic tone when discussing Myanmar’s chances, admitting that defeat against Vietnam would not come as a surprise.

“Vietnam are ranked higher than Myanmar in the FIFA rankings, and I’ve only been in charge of the national team for a little over a week,” Andersen explained. “This is a friendly match, so we wanted to face a strong opponent and test the tactical ideas we’ve been working on. It’s an excellent challenge for our team. If we lose to Vietnam, that’s perfectly understandable. But if we can achieve a positive result, it would be a very pleasant surprise.”

Meanwhile, Myanmar defender Nanda Kyaw stressed that his team is eager to measure themselves against one of the region’s top sides and demonstrate the progress they have made under their new coaching staff.

“Both teams have changed compared to our previous meetings,” Nanda Kyaw said. “We’re still adapting to our new head coach. Although this is only a friendly, Myanmar will give everything on the pitch and show what we’ve been working on during training.”

The friendly between Vietnam and Myanmar will serve as an important test for both teams as they continue preparations for the 2026 ASEAN Championship, with Vietnam looking to defend their regional crown and Myanmar beginning a new chapter under Andersen’s leadership.
