Ho Chi Minh city, 19 July 2026 – Naturalized striker Hoang Vu Samson has completed a surprise move ahead of the 2026/27 season, officially joining Becamex Ho Chi Minh City FC as the club strengthens its squad for the new campaign.
At the age of 38, Samson is still expected to play an important role, bringing a wealth of experience and proven goalscoring ability to the team’s attacking line.
The decision to sign Samson is part of head coach Gerard Albadalejo’s squad-building strategy. The Spanish tactician has prioritized experienced players who are familiar with Vietnamese football and can make an immediate impact.
Under the V.League 2 regulations, each club is allowed only one naturalized player slot, making the decision particularly significant. Ho Chi Minh City FC’s coaching staff believe Samson is an ideal choice given his extensive experience and proven track record in Vietnamese football.
Samson first arrived in Vietnam in 2007 and quickly established himself as a prolific goalscorer while representing several clubs throughout his career. After becoming a naturalized Vietnamese citizen in 2013, he went on to cement his status as one of the most successful strikers in the history of the country’s professional league system.
To date, the 1988-born forward has scored a remarkable 209 goals in the V.League 1. Most recently, Samson played for PVF-CAND, contributing four important goals despite no longer being at the peak of his career.
Although age presents an obvious challenge, Samson has continued to maintain his physical condition and goalscoring instincts. Albadalejo also pointed to global stars such as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as examples of players who have remained effective well beyond the age of 35.
Samson has already joined up with his new teammates and is settling quickly into life at Ho Chi Minh City FC. With his vast experience and understanding of Vietnamese football, the veteran striker is expected to provide leadership both on and off the pitch.
His arrival could prove particularly valuable as Ho Chi Minh City FC target promotion in the upcoming season. While Samson may be entering the final stages of his playing career, the club will hope his experience and eye for goal can make the difference in their push to return to Vietnam’s top flight.
