Vietnam women’s football team suffer opening defeat to Taiwan at ASIAD 2026

Nagoya, 14 Sep 2026 – Vietnam began their women’s football campaign at ASIAD 2026 with a 2-1 defeat to Taiwan on the afternoon of September 14, despite a late goal from Thanh Nha.

Vietnam made a slow start and were forced to defend deep as Taiwan controlled the early stages. The pressure produced the opening goal in the 16th minute. Su Yu-hsuan timed her run perfectly to collect a through ball before beating goalkeeper Kim Thanh in a one-on-one situation. Head coach Hoang Van Phuc responded by introducing Duong Thi Van in place of Thai Thi Thao in the 28th minute. Vietnam then came close to equalising eight minutes later when a corner from the right caused confusion inside the penalty area. Thu Thuong reacted quickly and directed a header towards goal, but her effort struck the post.

Vietnam consequently entered the half-time break trailing 1-0.

Taiwan continued to apply pressure after the restart. In the 50th minute, Tanaka Maho was presented with an opportunity from close range, but Kim Thanh produced an excellent reflex save. Vietnamese goalkeeper came to her team’s rescue again four minutes later, diving to keep out a dangerous long-range effort from Su Yu-hsuan. Vietnam gradually regained control during the latter stages of the second half but continued to struggle to create clear chances against a well-organised defence.

Taiwan doubled their advantage in the 81st minute when Wakabayashi turned inside the penalty area and fired home to make it 2-0. Vietnam refused to surrender and reduced the deficit four minutes later. Hai Yen switched play towards the right flank, allowing Vu Thi Hoa to accelerate forward and deliver a low cross for Thanh Nha to finish from close range.

Coach Hoang Van Phuc’s side nearly completed their comeback in stoppage time when Ngoc Minh Chuyen broke through and faced the Taiwan goalkeeper. However, her final shot lacked power and was comfortably saved. The missed opportunity brought an end to Vietnam’s late rally as they suffered a 2-1 defeat in their opening match of the 20th Asian Games.
