Hai Phong, 4 May 2026 – Coach Chu Dinh Nghiem has officially stepped down as head coach of Hai Phong FC after five memorable seasons, taking on a new role as the club’s Technical Director.
Speaking to media on May 4, the experienced coach confirmed his decision to leave the dugout, ending a highly significant chapter in Hai Phong’s recent history. Following his departure, coach Dang Van Thanh has immediately been appointed to lead the team for the remainder of the 2025/26 V.League 1 campaign, beginning with preparations for Round 22.
Chu Dinh Nghiem is widely regarded as one of the most influential coaches in the club’s modern era. Since arriving at Hai Phong, he successfully transformed the team into one of the most entertaining sides in Vietnamese football, building a fast-paced and attack-minded playing style that earned praise from fans and experts alike.
The greatest achievement of his tenure came during the 2022 V.League 1 season, when Hai Phong produced a remarkable title challenge before eventually finishing as runners-up. Under his leadership, the Port City club consistently became a difficult opponent for every team in the league and maintained a competitive presence despite financial and squad limitations.
This season, Hai Phong have experienced mixed results but still remain in a relatively stable position. Before handing over his duties, Chu Dinh Nghiem left the club sitting seventh in the V.League 1 standings with 28 points after 21 matches.
In recent weeks, speculation surrounding his future had intensified, particularly with reports suggesting Ninh Binh FC were interested in appointing the former Hanoi FC manager. However, Chu Dinh Nghiem has so far refused to comment publicly on his next career move.
Meanwhile, Hai Phong are preparing for what is expected to be a difficult away match against Ninh Binh in Round 22. The encounter will also mark the beginning of a new era for the Port City side following one of the most important coaching transitions in recent years.
