Vietnam endured another disappointing day at ASIAD 2026 after failing to add a single medal on September 27, leaving the delegation’s overall tally unchanged at 18 medals after eight official days of competition.
Vietnam’s final medal hopes of the day rested with Le Thi Cam Tu, Tran Thi Loan and Ha Thi Thuy Hang in the women’s 200m and long jump finals, but none were able to challenge the leading athletes. Cam Tu finished seventh in the women’s 200m final, while Loan also placed seventh in the long jump with a best effort of 6.18m. Thuy Hang recorded 5.95m in the same event. The results reflected the significant gap Vietnam continue to face against Asia’s leading athletes in several individual disciplines.
A medal-less day had been considered a realistic possibility given that Vietnam had relatively few leading contenders competing in finals on September 27. In other sports offering medals during the day, including archery, kurash and fencing, Vietnamese athletes were eliminated before reaching the decisive rounds. The delegation’s most encouraging individual performance came from shooter Trinh Thu Vinh, who ranked third in the precision stage of the women’s 25m pistol qualification. However, that represented only the first half of the event, with Thu Vinh scheduled to compete in the rapid-fire stage on September 28 as she attempts to secure a place in the final.
Vietnam also suffered several disappointing results in events that had not yet reached their medal rounds. The men’s volleyball team fell to a 3-0 defeat against India, while the women’s doubles sepak takraw team suffered a surprise group-stage loss to Laos, adding to a difficult day for the Vietnamese delegation.
Several of Vietnam’s Southeast Asian rivals, by contrast, enjoyed considerable success on September 27. Thailand added another gold through Puripol Boonson, taking their total to nine gold medals as they continued to compete near the top of the overall standings. Malaysia collected two gold medals in squash during the day, while Singapore celebrated a gold from sprinter Shanti Pereira in the women’s 200m.
Vietnam have now gone two consecutive competition days without winning a medal at ASIAD 2026. The delegation’s tally therefore remains at 18 medals — one gold, one silver and 16 bronze — as attention turns to the remaining events and further opportunities to return to the podium.
