Ninh Binh FC unexpectedly terminate contract with their head coach after Ninh Binh derby

Ninh Binh, 2 March 2026 – On the evening of March 2, just 24 hours after a painful 2–3 comeback defeat to Nam Dinh in Round 14 of the V.League 1 2025–2026 season, Ninh Binh officially announced the departure of head coach Gerard Albadalejo. The decision came swiftly, reflecting the growing pressure surrounding the club following a sharp dip in form at a crucial stage of the campaign.

At Thien Truong Stadium, Ninh Binh appeared to be in full control early on. Goals from Thanh Thinh and Hoang Duc gave the visitors a commanding 2–0 lead, reinforcing their status as one of the strongest sides in the title race. However, the momentum shifted dramatically in the second half. Nam Dinh intensified their pressure, exposing defensive vulnerabilities and scoring three unanswered goals to complete a stunning turnaround. The final whistle confirmed Ninh Binh’s third consecutive league defeat.

The result significantly altered the standings. From being league leaders not long ago, Ninh Binh have now slipped to third place with 27 points. They trail Hanoi Police FC by eight points, and that gap could stretch to 11 depending on upcoming results. For a team that once looked like a serious championship contender, the sudden downturn has cast serious doubts over their title ambitions.

Facing the reality of a fading championship push, the club’s board opted for immediate action. Gerard Albadalejo, who had overseen both the team’s early-season surge and recent slump, was relieved of his duties. In addition, a member of the technical staff also stepped down as part of the restructuring process. The club is expected to officially unveil a new head coach on March 3 as part of its effort to revive momentum for the remainder of the season.

The incoming manager will have limited time to stabilize the squad. With only four days to prepare, his first challenge will be a home fixture against bottom-placed Da Nang at 6:00 PM on March 7 at Ninh Binh Stadium. While Da Nang sit at the foot of the table, the pressure will be firmly on Ninh Binh to respond convincingly and restore confidence among players and supporters alike.
