Yokohama FC Extends Contract with Forward Cong Phuong Despite Lack of Playtime
Yokohama FC has officially announced the contract extension with Vietnamese forward Cong Phuong until the end of 2024, despite his limited playtime last season.
Cong Phuong joined the Japanese club last year amid high expectations from fans but experienced a disappointing season. Throughout the previous season, he did not play any minutes in J.League 1 with Yokohama and was often not registered for matches. He was even relegated to train with the reserve team.
Yokohama FC finished last in J.League 1 in 2023 and was relegated. Despite not being part of the coach’s main plans, the club has decided to renew Cong Phuong’s contract.
The extension means that Cong Phuong will remain with the club for the 2024 season, now competing in J.League 2. Fans are hopeful that in a less competitive environment like J.League 2, Cong Phuong will have more opportunities to play. Last season, his only appearance was in a J.League Cup match against Nagoya Grampus.
Cong Phuong’s lack of game time has affected his opportunities with the Vietnam national team. Although he was called up to the national team in September, he was not included in the squad for the Asian Cup 2023 by coach Philippe Troussier.
