Sharing with the Japanese media, Cong Phuong expressed his aspirations for the new season with Yokohama, and also explained why he was not called up to the Vietnam national team for the Asian Cup 2023.
Cong Phuong, once a crucial player for the Vietnam national team under coach Park Hang Seo’s reign, has faced challenges securing a spot on the team since coach Troussier took charge.
In the squad for the Asian Cup 2023, coach Troussier did not call up Cong Phuong, despite the former HAGL player scoring against Palestine in friendly matches in September 2023.
Speaking to the Japanese media about not being called up to the Vietnam national team, Cong Phuong said: “The reason I wasn’t selected for the national team is due to limited playing time at my club. Therefore, if I perform well at the club and achieve good results, I may have a chance to return to the national team.”
Currently playing for Yokohama FC in J-League 2, last season, the Nghe An-born striker only played for 2 minutes. Hence, his touch and form haven’t been optimal, despite being active and utilized in new positions during training sessions.
Cong Phuong remarked: “Last season, I was often deployed as a defensive midfielder. I’m usually an attacker, so I had to adapt. I believe I can be more effective if I play in my preferred position.”
