Thuy Linh Advances to Quarterfinals at the 2024 German Open Badminton Championship

Vietnam’s number one female badminton player, Nguyen Thuy Linh, quickly defeated her American opponent Lauren Lam 21-14, 21-7 to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2024 German Open Badminton Championship.

Having beaten Lam in 2022, Thuy Linh had a slight mental advantage when they met again on February 29. Along with her experience and versatile playing style, she consistently led her American opponent – currently ranked 53rd in the world.

In both sets, Thuy Linh took the initiative, frequently executing smashes that forced the 21-year-old to retreat defensively. Recognizing Lam’s height advantage, the seventh seed chose a strategy of pushing the shuttle to the corners of the court to minimize the risk of powerful returns. Despite Lam’s efforts to quickly move and save Thuy Linh’s challenging shots, she often found herself outmatched.

The match progressed quickly but entirely according to Thuy Linh’s plan, allowing her to easily win with scores of 21-14, 21-7 in just 29 minutes.

This victory propels Thuy Linh into the quarterfinals, where she will face a formidable opponent, Ratchanok Intanon. The 29-year-old Thai player, currently ranked 14th in the world, boasts an impressive track record, including a World Championship title in 2013, an Asian Championship in 2015, and three SEA Games gold medals.

Moreover, the win over Lam helped Thuy Linh accumulate an additional 3,850 ranking points and $1,260 USD. Continuing her winning streak could improve her world ranking and enhance her chances of qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The German Open is part of the BWF World Tour Super 300 series. Following this tournament, Thuy Linh will compete in upcoming events in France, England, Switzerland, and Spain.

The quarterfinal match between Thuy Linh and Ratchanok Intanon is scheduled to take place at 11 pm tonight, March 1.
