Vo Thi Kim Anh has made history by becoming the fifth Vietnamese athlete to secure a spot at the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics.
Competing in the 54kg category, Kim Anh showcased her exceptional skills in a decisive match against Tunisia’s Islem Ferchichi, winning with a unanimous score of 5-0. The judges scored the bout 30-27 in all rounds, with one round being scored 30-26 in favor of Kim Anh. Her journey to the Olympics included victories over athletes from the Dominican Republic and Hungary, demonstrating her versatility against competitors from different continents.
This achievement marks the second consecutive Olympic appearance for Vietnamese boxing, following the participation of Nguyen Thi Tam and Nguyen Van Duong at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Kim Anh is among the 65 athletes receiving focused investment from Vietnam, benefiting from a specialized nutrition regimen to support her preparation for the 2024 Games.
The qualification of Kim Anh adds to the success of other Vietnamese athletes who have already earned their Olympic berths, including Nguyen Thi That in cycling, Trinh Thu Vinh and Le Thi Mong Tuyen in shooting, and Nguyen Huy Hoang in swimming. This achievement places An Giang province at the forefront of contributing athletes to the national Olympic team.
The Vietnamese boxing team’s success can be attributed to the efforts of a dedicated coaching staff, including Dam Cong Dien, a specialist in charge of boxing at the Department of Physical Education and Sports, head coach Nguyen Nhu Cuong, and Thai boxing expert Tawan Mungphingklang. Their guidance has been instrumental in preparing athletes like Kim Anh for the world stage, underscoring Vietnam’s growing prowess in boxing on the international scene.
