Football expert Trinh Minh Hue pointed out the reasons for Vietnam’s 0-1 defeat against Indonesia.
Vietnam’s national team suffered a disappointing 0-1 loss to Indonesia at the Bung Karno Stadium in the third round of the second qualifying round for the 2026 World Cup in Asia. This was Vietnam’s second consecutive loss under coach Troussier to this team.
In the match at the Bung Karno Stadium, Vietnam started well and played well in the first 20 minutes. However, in the subsequent period, Vietnam did not perform well, allowing the opponent to dominate and make mistakes that led to the defeat.
Evaluating the match at the Bung Karno Stadium, football expert Trinh Minh Hue identified two reasons for Vietnam’s defeat: “Vietnam played against the home team in front of an 80,000-strong fiery atmosphere and stretched themselves too thin, resulting in the whole team becoming exhausted after just 20 minutes, suddenly losing momentum. From there, Indonesia gradually took control of the game in terms of physicality and gameplay. This was a mistake in being too eager to engage on the opponent’s field.”
The second reason, according to expert Trinh Minh Hue, is: “Throughout the match, our players rarely penetrated the opponent’s penalty box, and as a result, there were no shots on goal. Not just in this match, but throughout this year, almost all national team matches hardly ever saw the ball being brought into the opponent’s penalty box to score.
Being exhausted in the match and having difficulty approaching the penalty area and the opponent’s goal reflects the tactical level of Vietnam’s team in this match as being inferior to Indonesia’s team.”
Statistics show that in the last 10 matches across all competitions, Vietnam’s national team lost 9, with a 90% loss rate. Specifically, Vietnam lost 0-2 to China, 0-2 to Uzbekistan, 0-6 to South Korea in the FIFA Days matches in October 2023. Then, coach Troussier’s team won 2-0 against the Philippines before losing 0-1 to Iraq in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in November 2023.
In 2024, Vietnam lost 1-2 in a friendly match against Kyrgyzstan, lost 2-4 to Japan, lost 0-1 to Indonesia, and 2-3 to Iraq in the group stage of the Asian Cup, and lost 0-1 at Bung Karno Stadium. In total, Vietnam’s national team conceded 22 goals and scored 7 in this series of 10 matches with 9 losses.
