In a significant development for Vietnamese football, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) officially announced on March 28, 2024, the appointment of Hoang Anh Tuan as the head coach of the Vietnam U23 team for the upcoming 2024 AFC U23 Championship.
With a contract with VFF since 2022, coach Hoàng Anh Tuan has been instrumental in nurturing and leading young national teams, notably guiding the Vietnam U20 team through the qualifiers to the U20 AFC Championship in Uzbekistan in May 2023. His recent accomplishment includes leading the U23 team to victory in the Southeast Asian U23 Championship, securing the title against Indonesia in August 2023 in Thailand. Tuấn’s historic achievement of coaching the U19 team to the top 4 in the 2016 AFC U19 Championship, thereby qualifying for the 2017 FIFA U20 World Cup alongside Japan, South Korea, and Saudi Arabia, has also been a highlight of his career.
The Vietnam U23 team is set to compete in Group D of the 2024 AFC U23 Championship in Qatar, alongside Uzbekistan, Kuwait, and Malaysia. The team’s campaign will kick off against Kuwait on April 17, followed by matches against Malaysia on April 20 and Uzbekistan on April 23.
In preparation for the championship, the Vietnam U23 team will begin training at the Vietnam Youth Football Training Center from April 5, 2024. Ahead of the tournament, the team will travel to Qatar for a training camp and a friendly match against Jordan’s U23 team on April 10, as part of their final preparations.
The VFF has provided extensive support for the U23 team, including training camps alongside the national team during FIFA Days since 2023. Recently, during the FIFA Days in March 2024, the U23 team trained in Tajikistan and played two friendly matches against Tajikistan’s U23 team, securing a win and a draw.
The appointment of coach Hoang Anh Tuan comes at a crucial time, as the Vietnam U23 team aims to make a significant impact at the 2024 AFC U23 Championship. With a track record of success and a focus on development, Tuấn’s leadership is expected to propel Vietnam’s young talents to new heights on the international stage.
