ASIAD champion Pham Quang Huy misses the chance to participate in the 2024 Olympics

At the final Olympic qualification round for the Paris 2024 Games, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from April 11 to 20, Vietnamese shooter Pham Quang Huy faced tough competition in the men’s 10m air pistol event. Despite a commendable performance, Huy scored 576 points and finished 21st, which was insufficient to advance him to the finals or secure a spot in the upcoming Olympics.

Huy’s teammates, Phan Cong Minh and Lai Cong Minh, also competed in the same event, finishing 9th with 581 points and 47th with 571 points, respectively. Unfortunately, none of the three Vietnamese shooters managed to break into the top 8—a prerequisite for advancing to the final round and maintaining a chance to qualify for the Paris Olympics.

This outcome was particularly disheartening for Pham Quang Huy, who had previously showcased his prowess by winning a gold medal at the 19th Asian Games in the men’s 10m air pistol. Although a prestigious achievement, the Asian Games do not count as an Olympic qualifying event, thus necessitating his participation in further international competitions to attempt to clinch a spot at the Paris Games.

The Olympic qualifying rounds are renowned for their high stakes and intense competition, drawing the best talents from around the world. Each event serves as a critical platform for athletes aspiring to reach the Olympics, making every point and every target crucial.

For Huy and his teammates, the journey to Olympic qualification has been a rigorous and challenging endeavor, reflecting the high level of commitment and skill required at this elite level of sport. While they did not achieve their goal this time, the experience gained from competing on such a significant international stage is invaluable and will undoubtedly contribute to their development as athletes.

Looking ahead, the Vietnamese shooting team will continue to train and compete, aiming for success in future international events and keeping their Olympic dreams alive.
