Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) has officially announced the appointment of Mr. Choi Won Kwon, from South Korea, as the assistant coach for the Vietnam Men’s and U23 National Teams. The contract signing took place today, May 9, 2024, at the VFF headquarters.
This strategic decision to bring Mr. Choi on board was based on a recommendation by the newly appointed head coach, Kim Sang Sik, as part of a comprehensive plan to organize the coaching staff for the upcoming responsibilities of the National and U23 teams. Alongside signing Mr. Choi, the VFF is also set to select and introduce several Vietnamese assistant coaches to best support Coach Kim Sang Sik in his technical duties.
Mr. Choi Won Kwon, aged 43 (born in 1981), has an impressive football background, having represented the South Korean U23 National Team in the quarterfinals of the 2004 Athens Olympics. His club career in the K-League included stints with FC Seoul, Gwangju, Jeju United, Gyeongju, and Daegu FC.
After retiring as a player, Choi transitioned to coaching, starting as an assistant coach at Daegu FC in 2016. He was later promoted to head coach of the club in November 2022, a position he held until April 2024.
Known for a tactical approach that closely aligns with Coach Kim Sang Sik’s strategies, Choi is expected to be a significant asset for Vietnam’s football, acting as a reliable right-hand man for the head coach. His understanding of high-level football dynamics is anticipated to enhance the coaching quality and strategic implementation for the national teams.
Upon assuming his role, Mr. Choi Won Kwon will immediately engage in the football activities by attending V.League matches. This is part of his task to collaborate in player selection for the national squad ahead of the upcoming FIFA Days training camp in June. The integration of Choi’s expertise is a crucial step towards strengthening Vietnam’s football teams on both the domestic and international stages.
