It is with deep sadness that we report the passing of Nguyen Minh Triet, a young gymnast from Vietnam’s national youth gymnastics team and the military sports team. He passed away this morning, May 9th, at the age of 18.
In November 2023, during a training session, Nguyen Minh Triet suffered a severe injury. He was diagnosed with a dislocation at the C5 and C6 vertebrae which compressed his spinal cord, resulting in quadriplegia. An emergency surgery was performed, but the doctors reported that the impact of the fall had caused such severe damage to the spinal cord that the prognosis for recovery was below 10%, impacting his limbs and respiratory system.
Throughout his treatment, Minh Triet received support from various benefactors and sports authorities, but unfortunately, his injuries were too severe. His family has announced that the funeral will be held in Hanoi.
This tragic event underscores the risks associated with sports and highlights the need for stringent safety measures in training environments. The sports community mourns the loss of such a promising young athlete. Our thoughts are with Nguyen Minh Triet’s family, friends, and teammates during this difficult time.
