On May 23, the Vietnam women’s volleyball team triumphed with a 3-0 victory against Singapore in the AVC Challenge Cup 2024, held in the Philippines. With this win, the team will compete against Kazakhstan tomorrow for the top spot in Group B.
Facing the weakest team in Group B, head coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet used this match to experiment with different lineups and optimize personnel options. Notably, Vietnam fielded all three opposite hitters from the start: Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen, Hoang Thi Kieu Trinh, and Nguyen Thi Tra My, with Kieu Trinh being tested in the outside hitter position.
The effectiveness of Vietnam’s diverse attacking strategies and the inexperience of their opponents allowed the team to quickly widen the gap, securing a comfortable 25-8 win in the first set. Bich Tuyen, Tra My, and Kieu Trinh were particularly outstanding, consistently scoring for the team. Bich Tuyen and Tra My were especially successful with their powerful and precise serves.
In the second set, middle blocker Dinh Thi Tra Giang and setter Kim Thoa were rotated in by the coaching staff, while the attacking trio of Bich Tuyen, Kieu Trinh, and Tra My continued to play. Despite some early struggles, with Singapore leading 7-3 due to Vietnam’s lack of focus, the team quickly regained control after a timeout. Singapore faced further difficulties when their captain, Ting Rachel, left the court due to a knee injury. However, they fought back admirably, tying the score at 18-18 and even taking the lead. It was only through crucial adjustments by Coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet that Vietnam managed to secure a thrilling 29-27 victory in the second set.
For the third set, Vietnam fielded their strongest lineup, including outside hitter Vi Thi Nhu Quynh, Tran Tu Linh, and Pham Thi Hien. The team dominated the set, winning 25-10 and concluding the match with a 3-0 sweep. This victory places Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen and her teammates at the top of Group B, with two wins out of two matches.
Tomorrow at 12 PM (May 24), the Vietnam women’s volleyball team will play a crucial match against Kazakhstan, who are ranked 33rd in the world. Kazakhstan, bringing their strongest lineup to the AVC Challenge Cup 2024, aims to defeat all their opponents and clinch the championship.
With both teams determined to secure the top spot in Group B, tomorrow’s match promises to be a thrilling encounter, showcasing high-level volleyball and strategic play. The Vietnam team, buoyed by their recent performances, will look to continue their winning streak and advance confidently in the tournament.
