Following their victory against Hanoi Police FC in Round 19, Becamex Binh Duong headed to Quang Nam with high hopes of closing the gap with leaders Thep Xanh Nam Dinh. However, Quang Nam, still fighting for a secure spot in the standings, delivered one of the biggest surprises of the round by defeating Becamex Binh Duong 2-1.
Meanwhile, the reigning champions Hanoi Police FC continued to struggle. Under interim coach Tran Tien Dai, they failed to secure all three points, losing 1-2 to Ho Chi Minh FC at Thong Nhat Stadium. This defeat further complicates their mission to defend their title, posing a significant challenge for Quang Hai and his teammates.
Like Ho Chi Minh FC, Hanoi FC was one of the successful home teams in Round 20 of the Night Wolf V-League 1 2023-2024. Despite an early penalty that saw them trailing to Dong A Thanh Hoa, Hanoi FC staged a comeback with captain Van Quyet scoring twice. This victory, witnessed by Vietnam national team coach Kim Sang Sik, moved Hanoi FC up to fifth place, just one win away from second-placed Becamex Binh Duong.
LPBank Hoang Anh Gia Lai also had a successful home game against Hong Linh Ha Tinh. Despite conceding first at Pleiku Stadium, relentless effort and a bit of luck allowed them to overturn the score and win 2-1.
While the home teams dominated the May 21 matches, with all four securing victories, the scenario flipped on May 22, where visiting teams celebrated wins. In the most anticipated match, Hai Phong stunned Thep Xanh Nam Dinh by taking a 4-0 lead within the first two-thirds of the game.
Though playing at home, Thep Xanh Nam Dinh refused to accept defeat easily. Their fightback yielded two goals from Rafaelson, sparking hopes of a comeback. However, Hai Phong’s resilient defense held firm, securing their victory.
Despite the loss, Thep Xanh Nam Dinh retains the top spot in the standings, as the three teams immediately behind—Becamex Binh Duong, MerryLand Quy Nhon Binh Dinh, and Hanoi Police FC—also failed to win this round. Nonetheless, coach Vu Hong Viet’s team needs to quickly regain their form to maintain their push for a maiden V-League title.
Similar to Hai Phong, The Cong Viettel and Song Lam Nghe An also triumphed on the road, securing crucial points. The Cong Viettel’s victory propelled them to eighth place, keeping alive their hopes of breaking into the medal contention if they continue their winning streak.
Round 20 of the Night Wolf V-League 1 2023-2024 was exciting, with a record number of goals—22 in total, averaging 3.14 goals per match. This demonstrates that despite the intense competition, the league maintains high-quality performances, ensuring thrilling football for fans.
