On May 26, the Vietnam women’s volleyball team secured a 3-1 victory over Indonesia in their final Group B match at the AVC Challenge Cup 2024, held in the Philippines.
Having already secured a place in the semifinals as Group B leaders, head coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet took the opportunity to field younger talents such as Nguyen Thi Tra My, Pham Thi Hien, and Vi Thi Nhu Quynh against Indonesia, who were already out of contention for the semifinals.
Despite being last year’s runners-up, Indonesia could not field their strongest lineup for this year’s tournament and were considered underdogs against the defending champions Vietnam, who had a full squad of star players.
Even with a secondary lineup, the Vietnamese team dominated the match. The standout performer was 22-year-old Vi Thi Nhu Quynh from Nghe An, who had an explosive game, scoring 26 points from various positions on the court. Her performance was pivotal in Vietnam’s 3-1 victory over Indonesia.
Nguyen Thi Tra My, a 20-year-old debutant, also made a significant impact by contributing 10 points with powerful wing attacks. Pham Thi Hien added 9 points with her quick hits, creating unexpected and game-changing plays.
Among the few key players fielded, Tran Tu Linh scored 11 points but showed inconsistency with several missed opportunities and less effective defensive support. Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen was used selectively by Coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet and managed to score 10 points, showcasing her class.
Despite the victory, the Vietnamese team needs to address some issues, particularly the complacency and lack of focus that allowed Indonesia to win one set.
With four consecutive wins, the Vietnam women’s volleyball team topped Group B and will face the second-placed team from Group A in the semifinals of the AVC Challenge Cup 2024 at 5 PM on May 28. Their likely opponent in the semifinals will be Australia, currently ranked 56th in the world.
This win reinforces Vietnam’s status as a dominant force in the tournament, but they must maintain their concentration and intensity to continue their success and aim for the championship title.
