On June 8, a senior official from the Department of Culture and Sports (DCS) of Ba Ria – Vung Tau confirmed to Lao Dong Newspaper that Ba Ria – Vung Tau Football Joint Stock Company, the managing entity of Ba Ria – Vung Tau Football Club, has submitted a proposal to the provincial People’s Committee to withdraw from the 2024-2025 season.
The primary reason for the proposed withdrawal is the club’s financial difficulties. The club has requested local authorities for support to address these challenges.
In response, the People’s Committee has directed the DCS to collaborate with relevant agencies and the football company to gather information and seek solutions. The DCS’s role has traditionally been to oversee the club’s professional activities, while the operational management falls under the purview of the company’s business plan, registered with the Department of Planning and Investment.
“We have invited the company’s representatives for a meeting to understand the situation, but the current representative is not available locally. We anticipate discussions will take place next week,” a senior DCS official said.
Since 2022, Ba Ria – Vung Tau Football Club has been entangled in several controversies regarding unpaid bonuses and signing fees to players, issues that have persisted into 2023.
On June 6, 2024, the Ba Ria – Vung Tau Provincial Police detained six players from the club for investigation into allegations of “gambling” and “organizing gambling” during some matches. According to the investigation, these players reportedly conspired to underperform in certain matches for financial gain, either by receiving payments or by placing bets on opposing teams to win on various online betting sites.
The withdrawal proposal and the ongoing investigations have put Ba Ria – Vung Tau Football Club in a precarious position, raising concerns about the future of the club and its players. The forthcoming meetings between the football company and local authorities will be crucial in determining the club’s path forward.
