Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) President Tran Quoc Tuan has passionately addressed the national team, urging them to shorten the championship cycle for the ASEAN Cup.
Under the management of Coach Philippe Troussier, the Vietnam national football team experienced a significant decline in their FIFA ranking. Consequently, VFF dismissed Coach Troussier and appointed Kim Sang Sik as the new head coach. However, despite his efforts, Coach Kim Sang Sik was unable to turn the tide and lead Vietnam into the third round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Vietnam achieved a victory against the Philippines at home but suffered a defeat to Iraq away, leading to their elimination. Reflecting on this, President Tran Quoc Tuan stated, “I personally accompanied the Vietnam team to Iraq. It was a very challenging match for us due to the extremely hot weather and the fact that the home team had 22 players who play abroad. The beautiful goal by Tuan Hai is noteworthy and deserves recognition.”
The positive signals shown by the Vietnam team under Coach Kim Sang Sik have inspired hope among fans for a victory in the upcoming ASEAN Cup 2024. Addressing this optimism, President Tuan remarked, “I told the players that Vietnam once won the ASEAN Cup (formerly known as the AFF Cup) after a 10-year cycle, and now we aim to achieve this within six years.”
He further added, “Of course, winning a championship requires some luck, but we see the desire and dedication of the players. I believe that the Vietnam national team will regain the trust of the fans and bring joy to them.”
The encouragement from the VFF President comes as a morale booster for the team and fans alike. The upcoming ASEAN Cup will be a significant test for Coach Kim Sang Sik and his squad as they strive to live up to the expectations and achieve regional glory.
As the team prepares for the challenges ahead, the focus remains on building on the positive aspects seen in recent matches and maintaining the determination to succeed. With the backing of the VFF and the passion of the fans, the Vietnam national team aims to make a strong statement in the ASEAN Cup 2024.
