Song Lam Nghe An faces relegation threat after defeat to Quang Nam

On the afternoon of June 19th, at the Hoa Xuan Stadium, Song Lam Nghe An suffered a 2-4 defeat against Quang Nam in round 24 of the V.League 1 – 2023/2024. This loss significantly increases the risk of Song Lam Nghe An having to play in a relegation play-off to stay in the league.

Despite the crucial nature of the match for both teams, the first goal came early. In the 10th minute, following a seemingly harmless long pass from Quang Nam, Song Lam Nghe An’s goalkeeper Nguyen Van Viet rushed out to intercept. However, the Vietnamese international’s indecisive handling allowed Le Xuan Tu to chip the ball over him and score.

After conceding, Song Lam Nghe An tirelessly organized attacks to find an equalizer. They primarily relied on long balls and set-piece opportunities. In the 27th minute, from a corner on the left wing, Quang Nam’s Nguyen Vu Hoang Duong handled the ball in the penalty area, giving Song Lam Nghe An a chance to equalize from the spot.

Michael Olaha converted the penalty, deceiving goalkeeper Nguyen Van Cong to bring the score level at 1-1. Quang Nam responded with their own set-piece. In the 40th minute, from a free-kick delivered by Mach Ngoc Ha to the far post, foreign striker Paulo Conrado headed home powerfully, making it 2-1. This scoreline held until halftime, accurately reflecting the match dynamics.

Quang Nam executed more coherent and well-organized attacks, with standout performances from players like Xuan Tu and Ngoc Ha. In contrast, Song Lam Nghe An’s play was rather monotonous. Early in the second half, Song Lam Nghe An’s coach Pham Anh Tuan introduced Tran Manh Quynh and Le Dinh Long Vu to bolster the attack.

However, before they could find an equalizer, Song Lam Nghe An conceded a third goal. In the 49th minute, after a neat dribble past two Song Lam Nghe An defenders, Hoang Vu Samson unleashed a powerful volley, leaving goalkeeper Van Viet helpless. Song Lam Nghe An’s hopes were rekindled in the 70th minute when they were awarded another penalty after Vo Van Toan fouled in the box.

Once again, Olaha scored from the spot, reducing the deficit to 2-3. This goal provided a boost for Song Lam Nghe An, but they couldn’t find the equalizer. Instead, they conceded another goal in the 90th minute. This time, Hoang Vu Samson scored after a brilliant solo effort by Conrado.

The match ended with Quang Nam securing a 4-2 victory over Song Lam Nghe An. Coach Van Sy Son’s team temporarily occupies 9th place on the V.League 1 – 2023/2024 table with 32 points. Meanwhile, Song Lam Nghe An remains in 12th place with 26 points and is at risk of being pushed down to 13th by Hoang Anh Gia Lai.
