Vietnam women’s football competes for record-breaking prize money from AFC

The Ho Chi Minh 1 Women’s Football Club is set to receive a record-breaking prize from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) for a Vietnamese women’s club.

As the champions of the 2023 National Women’s Football Championship, Ho Chi Minh 1 FC has earned the right to represent Vietnam in the AFC Women’s Club Championship. The team will advance directly to the group stage, where they will compete with 11 other teams for the championship title.

By securing a spot in the group stage, coach Đoan Thi Kim Chi and her team are guaranteed to receive $100,000 USD (approximately 2.5 billion VND). This amount marks the largest prize ever awarded to a women’s football club in Vietnam’s history. If Ho Chi Minh 1 FC achieves draws or wins in the group stage, their total earnings could increase even further.

This significant financial incentive serves as a strong motivation for Ho Chi Minh 1 FC to perform at their best on the continental stage. For comparison, the annual prize for winning the National Women’s Football Championship in Vietnam is only 500 million VND.

The group stage of the AFC Women’s Club Championship for the 2024/2025 season will take place from October 6 to October 12. TP.HCM will host one of the groups, allowing them to play all three matches at home. The qualifying rounds are scheduled to start at the end of August, and the draw for the group stage will be held in Malaysia on July 18.

This participation not only boosts the club’s finances but also presents a golden opportunity for Ho Chi Minh 1 FC to showcase their talent and compete against the top women’s clubs in Asia.
