U16 Vietnam finishes fourth instead 2024 ASEAN U16 championship

The U16 Vietnam national team concluded their 2024 ASEAN U16 Championship campaign in fourth place after a 0-5 defeat to hosts U16 Indonesia in the third-place play-off, held on the afternoon of July 3 at Manahan Stadium.

While the primary goal of participating in youth tournaments is to help players gain experience and develop their skills, it is evident that U16 Vietnam still has much work to do in preparation for their main objective this year—the 2025 AFC U17 Asian Cup Qualifiers, set to take place in October.

Despite their efforts, the young Vietnamese squad faced a formidable Indonesian team, resulting in a challenging match that highlighted areas for improvement. The heavy defeat underscores the need for continued development and strategic adjustments as the team looks ahead to future competitions.

Coach Tran Minh Chien emphasized the importance of learning from this experience. “Participating in these tournaments is crucial for our players’ growth. We have identified key areas where we need to improve and will focus on these in the lead-up to the AFC U17 Asian Cup Qualifiers,” he stated.

U16 Vietnam’s journey in the 2024 ASEAN U16 Championship saw them achieve notable victories, including a strong start with a 15-0 win against U16 Brunei. However, the competition’s intensity increased as they progressed, culminating in a hard-fought semi-final against U16 Thailand and the challenging match against Indonesia for third place.

As the team prepares for the upcoming AFC U17 Asian Cup Qualifiers, the coaching staff and players will analyze their performances, refine their tactics, and continue building their strengths. The experience gained from the ASEAN U16 Championship will serve as a valuable foundation for the team’s future endeavors.

In conclusion, while the result may be disappointing, the U16 Vietnam team’s participation in the 2024 ASEAN U16 Championship has provided essential lessons and highlighted the areas that need attention. The focus now shifts to rigorous preparation for the AFC U17 Asian Cup Qualifiers, where the team aims to showcase their growth and compete at a higher level.
