On August 2nd, Vo Thi My Tien, the only swimmer from the Vietnamese contingent, competed in the women’s 200m individual medley at the Olympic Paris 2024. Despite achieving her personal best, she did not advance to the semifinals.
The swimmer from Long An participated in the second heat of the preliminary round, facing competitors from Peru, Chinese Taipei, Uruguay, Latvia, and Puerto Rico. Vo Thi My Tien finished fourth in her heat with a time of 2:17.18. However, in the overall ranking, she placed 27th out of 33 swimmers, which was not sufficient to secure a spot in the semifinals.
According to the coaching staff, the time of 2:17.18 is the best performance Vo Thi My Tien has achieved in this event. Her previous best was 2:17.26, recorded at the Asian Junior Championships in the Philippines in February 2024. This performance was the basis for the International Swimming Federation (FINA) to grant her a special entry to the Olympic Paris 2024.
This Olympic appearance marks the first in Vo Thi My Tien’s career. Despite not advancing, she has shown commendable effort and achieved a personal best. This event adds to the list of Vietnamese athletes who have concluded their participation at Olympic Paris 2024, including Hoang Thi Tinh (judo), Ha Thi Linh and Vo Thi Kim Anh (boxing), Pham Thi Hue (rowing), Vo Thi My Tien (swimming), Do Thi Anh Nguyet and Le Quoc Phong (archery), and Nguyen Thuy Linh and Le Duc Phat (badminton).
