Due to the impact of Typhoon Shanshan, which has made landfall in Japan, the U20 Vietnam football team has been forced to cancel their scheduled friendly match against Matsuyama University, which was set to take place on August 30.
This match was supposed to be the final training game for the U20 Vietnam team during their training camp in Ehime, Japan. The cancellation of this match has disrupted the team’s training schedule, although it was an unavoidable decision given the current weather conditions.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the typhoon made landfall in Kagoshima Prefecture this morning, located nearly 500 kilometers from Ehime, where the U20 Vietnam team is training. The JMA has indicated that the typhoon is expected to move into central and eastern Japan by the weekend. As a result, evacuation orders at level 4 have been issued in some areas of Japan due to the risk of heavy rain, flooding, and landslides. This means that the remaining training sessions for the U20 Vietnam team in Ehime may not be carried out as originally planned.
Head coach Hua Hien Vinh stated that the coaching staff is currently awaiting further updates from local authorities. If the weather conditions improve, the friendly match may be rescheduled for August 31. The team is set to return to Vietnam on September 1 to continue their final preparations for the AFC U20 Asian Cup 2025 qualifiers. During this final phase, the team is expected to play two internal matches against the U20 Russia team in Hanoi.
This disruption, while unfortunate, highlights the unpredictable nature of international training camps, especially when natural events like typhoons interfere. The U20 Vietnam team remains focused on their ultimate goal of performing well in the upcoming qualifiers.
