The Vietnam women’s volleyball team delivered a remarkable performance today (August 29), defeating China’s Henan Club with a convincing 3-0 victory in the quarterfinals of the VTV Cup International Women’s Volleyball Tournament. This victory secured their place in the tournament’s semifinals.

Facing a strong opponent in Henan Club, a formidable team from one of volleyball’s powerhouse countries, China, Vietnam’s head coach, Nguyen Tuan Kiet, deployed what is considered the team’s strongest lineup. The starting players included opposite hitter Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen, middle blockers Le Thanh Thuy and Nguyen Thi Trinh, outside hitters Vi Thi Nhu Quynh and Tran Tu Linh, setter Doan Thi Lam Oanh, and libero Nguyen Khanh Dang.

The match was filled with excitement and tension from the outset. The Chinese team, boasting superior height, quickly leveraged their attacking and blocking capabilities to open up a three-point lead (6-3). However, the vocal support of the home crowd spurred the Vietnamese team on, allowing them to match their opponents point for point. Key contributions came from the rapid-fire attacks of Nguyen Thi Trinh and Le Thanh Thuy, along with the powerful spikes from Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen. This combination enabled Vietnam to not only level the score but also take the lead, culminating in a narrow 26-24 victory in the first set.

The second set was another showcase of Vietnam’s determination and skill. Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen, in particular, stood out with her numerous point-scoring spikes. Although there was a moment of tension when Vietnam’s 24-21 lead was erased to a 24-24 tie, Bich Tuyen came through once more, delivering the decisive points that secured a 27-25 win for Vietnam.

The third set initially seemed to favor Henan Club, as they built a substantial five-point lead (5-10) and later extended it to four points (15-19). However, the Vietnam women’s team demonstrated extraordinary resilience, staging a dramatic comeback by scoring ten consecutive points to clinch the set 25-19. This final burst of excellence, highlighted by Bich Tuyen’s scoring spree of five crucial points, sealed Vietnam’s 3-0 overall victory, sending the fans into a state of euphoria.

With this victory, the Vietnam women’s volleyball team advances to the semifinals of the 2024 VTV Cup International Women’s Volleyball Tournament, where they will face South Korea’s Expressway team tomorrow (August 30). Expressway secured their semifinal spot by easily defeating King Whale Taipei (Taiwan) 3-0 in their quarterfinal match.
