Coach Cristiano Roland calls up unique talent for AFC U17 qualifiers

In preparation for the 2025 AFC U17 Asian Cup qualifiers, head coach Cristiano Roland has announced a 28-player roster for the Vietnam U17 team. One of the most intriguing names on the list is Maxwell James Peereboom, a relatively unknown player currently based in Australia.

Maxwell James Peereboom, born in 2008 in Ho Chi Minh City, holds Vietnamese nationality and currently resides with his parents in Australia. He began his football journey with local youth teams in Queensland before joining Gold Coast Knights, a top club in the National Premier Leagues Queensland, the highest tier of football in the state and part of Australia’s national football system.

Standing at 1.84 meters, Maxwell plays as a central defender and is noted for his excellent ball control and creative approach on the pitch. However, given his young age, not much information is available about him. This is why coach Cristiano Roland is keen to evaluate Maxwell’s abilities during the upcoming training camp before making any final decisions about the squad for the AFC U17 Asian Cup qualifiers.

Alongside Maxwell, the squad includes several other fresh faces, such as goalkeeper Phan Dinh Bach from PVF, midfielder Nguyen Le Quang Khoi from Ba Ria Vung Tau, and midfielder Chu Ngoc Nguyen Luc from Hanoi. The rest of the roster features players who participated in recent training sessions and competed in the Peace Cup 2024, an international tournament held in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, China, from August 16 to August 20.

At the Peace Cup, Vietnam U16 had a rough start, losing 0-4 to the host nation China. However, the team bounced back with a 3-0 win over Uzbekistan and a 1-0 victory against Japan, finishing as the tournament’s runners-up.

The Vietnam U17 team will train at the Vietnam Youth Football Training Center from September 16 to September 29. Following this, the team will travel to Japan for a training camp and practice matches from September 30 to October 9. Upon returning to Vietnam on October 10, coach Roland and his squad will finalize their preparations ahead of the AFC U17 Asian Cup 2025 qualifiers.

To further support Vietnam U17’s bid for a place in the AFC U17 Asian Cup finals, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) has successfully secured the hosting rights for the qualifiers. Vietnam will serve as the host nation for Group I, which will be held at Viet Tri Stadium in Phu Tho from October 23 to October 27.

Coach Cristiano Roland’s team will face U17 Kyrgyzstan on October 23, U17 Myanmar on October 25, and U17 Yemen on October 27, as they aim to secure a spot in the continental tournament. The home advantage, combined with the promising talent in the squad, will be critical as Vietnam seeks to qualify for the prestigious event.
