Hanoi FC suffers a comeback loss to The Cong Viettel in the capital derby

Hanoi led until the 75th minute but suffered a 1-2 comeback loss to The Cong Viettel in round 2 of the 2024-2025 V-League on September 22.

Unable to compete with Hanoi Police FC and Hanoi FC for their home ground, The Cong Viettel relocated to My Dinh Stadium for the 2024-2025 season. In their first match there, they faced Hanoi FC and secured a full victory.

Despite having less possession in the first half, The Cong Viettel created more scoring chances. In the 10th minute, they nearly took the lead when Henrique interfered unnecessarily. After Khuat Van Khang’s cross, Nguyen Thanh Chung’s clearance created an opportunity for Amarildo to shoot. The ball was rolling towards the goal, but Henrique, in an offside position, tapped it in. The referee consulted VAR and ruled out the goal.

Just seven minutes later, The Cong’s fans celebrated prematurely again when Bui Tien Dung executed a spectacular overhead kick from a corner, sending the ball narrowly wide of the post.

Hanoi FC, despite a lackluster performance, went ahead in the 57th minute. Do Hung Dung lofted a ball over The Cong’s defense for Joao Pedro to strike. The foreign forward’s first attempt was saved, but he capitalized on the rebound to score.

Following the goal, The Cong introduced Nguyen Hoang Duc, who is set to leave the club after the first phase of the season. His presence immediately energized the team. Seven minutes after entering the pitch, Hoang Duc made a significant impact, driving the ball from midfield to the edge of the box and unleashing a powerful shot that missed the post by a small margin.

Hanoi FC held their lead until the 75th minute when goalkeeper Van Hoang made a costly error. After a cross from Van Khang, Danh Trung’s diving header missed, but Van Hoang, startled, accidentally knocked the ball into his own net. Despite his effort to recover, the referee, aided by VAR, confirmed that the ball had crossed the line. Hanoi FC hoped for an offside call on Danh Trung, but the goal stood.

To add to Hanoi FC’s woes, they conceded another goal in the 90th minute. Amarildo rose to meet another cross, heading the ball into the ground and watching it bounce off the far post and into the net. The Cong then retreated to defend, securing a 2-1 victory after six minutes of injury time.

With this loss, Hanoi FC missed the chance to join league leaders Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAGL) at the top of the LPBank V-League 2024-2025 standings. The Cong climbed to fifth place with four points.
