Coach Kim Sang Sik is pleased with Cong Phuong’s outstanding performance in his debut match for Binh Phuoc FC

On the afternoon of October 19, Nguyen Cong Phuong scored the only goal to help Binh Phuoc FC secure a 1-0 victory over Tre Ho Chi Minh City FC in the qualifying round of the 2024–2025 National Cup, held on their home ground.

The match started off strong for Binh Phuoc FC as they opened the scoring in just the 5th minute. From a quick counter-attack, Le Van Nam delivered a precise cross into the path of Cong Phuong, who calmly slotted the ball past goalkeeper Duong Van Cuong with a well-placed shot, leaving him no chance to make a save.

Buoyed by the early goal, Binh Phuoc FC gained momentum and played with more confidence, creating several dangerous opportunities. Cong Phuong himself had another chance with a left-footed shot from a tight angle, but it missed the target.

However, towards the latter half of the first half, coach Nguyen Anh Duc’s players began to lose focus defensively, allowing Tre Ho Chi Minh City FC to apply pressure. Fortunately for Binh Phuoc FC, goalkeeper Bui Tan Truong remained solid and made crucial saves to keep their lead intact. The first half concluded with Binh Phuoc FC ahead 1-0.

In the second half, Cong Phuong was substituted early to conserve energy. In the 59th minute, he was replaced by Ho Sy Giap, an experienced player who previously played for Binh Duong FC in the V-League. Despite the change, Binh Phuoc FC’s attacking strength remained consistent, with the team continuing to apply pressure. If Nguyen Huu Khoi and Ho Sy Giap had been more clinical in front of goal, Binh Phuoc FC could have extended their lead and avoided a tense ending to the match.

In the 80th minute, Nguyen Trong Phu was shown a second yellow card and sent off, reducing Binh Phuoc FC to 10 men. Tre Ho Chi Minh City FC took advantage of the extra player and launched several attacks in search of an equalizer. However, due to the limited quality of their squad, they were unable to break through Binh Phuoc FC’s defense, and goalkeeper Tan Truong remained untroubled.

In the end, Binh Phuoc FC held on to their narrow 1-0 lead, with Cong Phuong’s early goal proving to be decisive. The victory sees them progress in the National Cup, with hopes of continuing their strong performance in the tournament.
