On the afternoon of October 23, the Vietnam women’s national football team secured a 2-0 victory against Uzbekistan at the Yongchuan Sports Center Stadium in Chongqing, China, during the Yongchuan Chongqing Women’s Football Tournament.
Facing the 48th-ranked team in the world, 11 spots below Vietnam in the FIFA rankings, coach Mai Duc Chung’s squad had a smooth start to the match.
In the 4th minute, Vietnam opened the scoring thanks to Tuyet Dung’s cross, which turned into an unexpected shot with a tricky trajectory. Uzbekistan’s goalkeeper misjudged the ball’s path, leading to an early goal for Vietnam.
With the early lead, Vietnam played with greater confidence. In the 6th minute, Hai Yen dribbled down the left side, entering Uzbekistan’s penalty area, but her shot went wide of the post. In the 20th minute, Bich Thuy’s shot from a well-coordinated play in the middle was saved by Uzbekistan’s goalkeeper. However, in the 35th minute, Vietnam doubled their lead when Bich Thuy crossed from the right, allowing Hai Yen to finish with a successful strike.
Just three minutes later, Vietnam nearly made it 3-0. Van Su broke Uzbekistan’s offside trap but narrowly missed the target with her shot. The remainder of the match saw several substitutions from both teams, but no further goals were scored.
After the game, coach Mai Duc Chung expressed gratitude to the Chinese Football Association and the local organizers for their warm hospitality towards the Vietnamese team. He also thanked the spectators in Chongqing for supporting both Vietnam and Uzbekistan.
“We see Uzbekistan as a key competitor in the Asian region. That’s why we aimed to perform well and secure this victory. I do feel a bit disappointed that the Vietnam women’s team had only 10 days of preparation, which meant our play wasn’t as cohesive as it could have been. With better preparation, we could have scored up to four goals against Uzbekistan, instead of just winning 2-0,” said coach Mai Duc Chung.
The victory provides a strong start for Vietnam as they continue to prepare for their next matches in the friendly tournament.
